Installing the Preliminary Release of Microsoft® Windows® Code Name "Longhorn"
This document provides general information and step-by-step instructions for installing Microsoft® Windows® Code Name "Longhorn."

Note

This is a pre-release of a product that is under development. Any or all installation instructions might change.
Information you must provide during the installation process
During the installation process, you will be asked for the three things listed in this section. Be sure to have the disc and information ready to provide when you are asked for them.

"Longhorn" installation disc (DVD).
Product key (25 characters). You can find your product key sticker on the installation disc folder.
Name of your computer. You'll need to provide this if your computer is currently connected to a network. To find your computer's name, click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. On the Computer Name tab, your computer's name is displayed after Full computer name.
Upgrading to "Longhorn"
The option to upgrade is not available in this pre-release version of "Longhorn." You must perform a custom (clean) installation or a dual-boot installation.

Installing "Longhorn"
Important

Before installing "Longhorn," be sure to remove all antivirus software. It's also good to run the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool to test your computer's random access memory (RAM). To use the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool, follow the instructions at the Microsoft website.
Custom (clean) installation
When you use the custom (clean) installation option to install "Longhorn," your existing version of Windows, including all of the files and settings, is automatically replaced. You must manually reinstall your programs when the "Longhorn" installation is done.

Choose this method if:

your computer does not have an operating system installed,
your computer is running a version of Windows other than Windows XP and you want to replace that operating system with "Longhorn," or
you want to delete your current operating system, partition your hard disk, and install "Longhorn" on a specific partition.
To perform a custom (clean) installation

Insert the "Longhorn" installation disc into the computer's DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.
When the message "Press any key to boot from CD" appears, press a key. Windows installation begins.
If you have an x64-based computer, you might see a blank screen for long time. It can take 20 minutes or longer before the next screen appears. Do not turn off your computer or restart it during this time.
After the blank screen, you will see a progress bar at the bottom of the screen. This stage might also take some time to complete.
On the Install Windows menu, click Install now.
On the Install Windows page, click Next.
On the Type your product key page, type the 25-character product key. You can find your product key sticker on the installation disc folder.
On the Please read and accept the License Terms page, if you accept the license terms, click I accept the License Terms.
On the Which type of installation do you want? page, click Custom.
On the Your installation settings page, change any settings that you want to change.
To install "Longhorn" on a partition, click Install Windows on this drive, and then follow the instructions on the screen. If you don't partition your hard disk, click Start Installation.
Continue to follow the instructions on your screen.
Dual-boot configuration with Windows XP
If you want to have more than one operating system on the same computer, you can install "Longhorn" on a specific partition. (This is called a dual-boot or multiboot configuration.) If you do this, be sure to install "Longhorn" on a different partition from the partition where your current version of Windows is installed.

Choose this method if you want to keep your current Windows XP installation and you have an available drive or partition.

To install a dual-boot configuration with Windows XP

Insert the "Longhorn" installation disc into your computer's DVD-ROM drive.
The Install Windows menu should appear automatically. If not, click Start, and then click My Computer. Double-click the drive containing the DVD, and then click setup.exe.
To choose where to install Windows, click Install Windows on this drive, and then follow the instructions on the screen.
Continue to follow the instructions on your screen.
Important

Be sure to reinstall your antivirus software after the installation is completed.
