Oslo, Norway July 30 – Nokia, Qt Software todayannounced that the Qt cross-platform application and user interface (UI)framework is integrating code, which enables development for the popularreal-time operating systems (RTOS) QNX and VxWorks. By sharing the code, Qtoffers embedded developers in industries, such as IP-based communications, aerospaceand automotive a chance to enhance the functionality of the partially completeports through Qt contributions to the Gitorious open repository.
Technical blog, detaileddocumentation (for
VxWorksand
QNX)as well as
snapshots ofthe ports will be available on the Qt web sites. Qt Software’s multi-licensingmodel means that these ports will be made available under the GNU LesserGeneral Public License version 2.1 and the Nokia Technology Preview LicenseAgreement version 2.3 for commercial customers until the 4.6.0 release isavailable.
With the release of Qt 4.6.0 later this year, Qt Software will startapplying a simplified ‘
PlatformSupport Procedure Policy’. These RTOS ports will qualify as Tier 3 platforms under the new policy, which means thatthey are not supported by Qt Software, but support may be available frompartners or the open source community.
“We release these partiallycomplete ports with hope that the community will build upon the groundwork thathas been carried out by our own in-house teams,” said Lars Knoll, DirectorR&D at Qt Software, Nokia. “Our vision is to have Qt Everywhere, so we havechosen to integrate these ports for the benefit of programmers involved indevice UI and application creation within the embedded space.”
Multitasking real time operatingsystems, QNX and VxWorks were developed by QNX and Wind River respectively; each uses specialised scheduling algorithms toproduce deterministic behavior in systems typically deployed within theembedded computing space. Both Qt ports were developed in cooperation withspecific companies working with embedded deployments in order to allow them tobenefit from Qt in their device UI and application builds. Due to the codeintegration, QNX and VxWorks ports may also now benefit from general upgradesof Qt.

About QtQt is a cross-platform applicationand UI framework. Using Qt, you can develop applications and user interfacesonce, and deploy them across many desktop and embedded operating systemswithout rewriting the source code. Qt Software, formerly Trolltech, wasacquired by Nokia in June 2008. For more details about Qt Software, pleasevisit
